  From the Pastor's Heart...

Yesterday

Can it be the end of another year already? Where has the time gone? (I used to get so tired of hearing people say that and now I’m one of “those people”.) I think that it is helpful and good to glance back and see where we’ve been. We can retrace our footsteps this past year and look at our life. We probably see some sorrow and also some joy. We see some first time experiences and some of the same ‘ol stuff that we’ve had for years. We see places where we are disappointed in ourselves, other places that we are amazed at God’s grace to see us through. I suppose, though, that not one of us can rightly accuse God of not being faithful, or that He didn’t supply us with what we needed. On the contrary, we appeal to our faith, believe that God was faithful, and that we experienced His mercy and His grace.

There is something, however, about looking forward to heaven-seeing God face to face and knowing Him as He is-that makes us look back and always be a little disappointed. You see, we are always longing for more of Him and less failure and sin in our own life. Our longing for complete perfection will always leave us feeling a little restless in this life. So I say, let’s glance back but not spend a whole lot of time dwelling on the past.

For myself, I want to remember two things:

1) God was faithful in the yesterdays of my life and He will be faithful in the tomorrows.

2) God is good.

If we lose our grip on these two things (I admit to slipping sometimes), life comes at us mean and fast. Don’t pass over God’s faithfulness and His goodness too fast as if you know it all already. In times when we feel overrun by circumstances, we will revisit the very core of both of these character traits of our Father. He is faithful and He is good. Let us humbly offer our lives in service to a God like that.

When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.

Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.

My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.”  Psalm 63:6-8 (NKJ)
