My Baptism ...by Megan Meadows

I have to admit at first I did not want to be baptized by immersion. I could only picture slimy things in the water and fishies nibbling my toes! But once we set the date and saw the pond I did not worry about things like that. After all I was announcing my belief in God and his Son; surely there would not be a barracuda attacking me during my baptism!

After that fear was squelched I had another even deeper fear. Was I truly in a place with my faith that I should be baptized? Did I believe strongly this was my time? And if I did make this vow could I live up to the awesome expectations of being a Christian? Now I had some serious praying to do. I do not sleep much at night anyway (all you mothers understand I am sure) so I sat up even later than usual reflecting and praying. I would like to say I came up with a definite answer to my questions, but sometimes I have found no answer to be the best answer of all!

The day came and went quickly. When I got to the Moyer’s I was not nervous, just at peace with my decision. Although the fleeting thought of embarrassing myself getting into and out of the pond, or horrors-them not being able to get me down under the water! I waded out to the circle of flowers and down I went. Then thankfully up I came washed clean of my sins and ready to tell the world my new found peace.

This was a day that marked the beginning of an end for me...I would like to be able to say I will never sin again, but I know that it is human nature to sin. I would like to say that now I am a model Christian, but I also know that is impossible to achieve. So where do I stop questioning? I stop with the question of where I am going when I leave this earth. I know there is still much to learn and accomplish, but I can rest easy knowing that there is a God to look after me and a Son who gave the ultimate sacrifice for me.

I was baptized at the Moyer's pond on August 18, 2002. I always wanted to be baptized in a pond or a lake because I remember that the baptismal services in Belarus were so beautiful. They would go to a river decorated with flowers in the water, and a choir would sing. I'm really glad that baptism includes church membership, and I love being a part of our church. Thank-you, everyone who has prayed for me!
