Moyers Travel to Peru

Dave and Nancy Moyer visited Ron, Regina, Hannah, Jeremiah, and Bethany Shultz in Dec. 2005.  It is summertime in Peru now, with school out for summer vacation.  Daytime highs were in the low 80's, if the sun was shining, with lows in the 40's at night.  Even though it was rainy season, the rain mostly came in the evening, and cleared up by morning.

We traveled from the Cusco valley at 11,000 feet altitude, up over higher mountain ranges into other valleys to see ruins of cities of the Inca Indians, ancestors of the present day Quechua people.   We also got to see the five Mennonite churches in the Cusco area.

Quechua people, most of whom live in the Andes mountains, speak Quechua as their native language, but some have also learned Spanish.  In the Mennonite churches, some praise songs are sung in Spanish, and others are sung in Quechua.  They use overheads for the words, so we were singing along in Quechua!  Preaching is mostly in Spanish, but sometimes the pastors preach for awhile in Quechua, so persons can hear it in their heart language.  We attended the kindergarten graduation at Promesa, the school where Ron teaches and Bethany attends.  The children sang with Ron accompanying on the guitar.  They presented a play of  the nativity story and received diplomas. It was a real privilege to visit our family for two weeks.  Now we can visualize where they live and the people they relate with.  The Lord is working in Peru, changing lives, and bringing a glow to faces.
