Mere Christianity Lesson Outline/Study by Glen Landis

Lesson 5

June 1, 2008

Book III Christian Behavior

2.  The Cardinal Virtues

Another way of thinking about morality

i.  Prudence...taking the time to think about what you are doing and what the consequences are.

ii.  Temperance...going the right length in any pleasure and no farther.

iii.  Justice...fair play, keeping promises

iv.  Fortitude...courage in the face of danger

3.  Social Morality

          i.  Marks of a Christian Society

                   -economic sharing,

                   -submission and honor

                   -lend without interest

                   -charitable giving

ii. The Reader’s Probable Responses

-That Lewis has gone much too far on one part of the subject and  not far enough on another; or he  has not even mentioned that moral rule I prefer.

iii. Summary

-A  Christian society will only come when we really want it-and that comes when we are truly Christian,  which leads to our internal state of affairs.
