Elder
Selection
The office of Elder (from the PMC organizational guidelines)
Purpose: to assist the
pastor in providing leadership for worship, teaching, counseling,
visitation, evangelism, and oversight for the congregation.
Duties: to assist in
ministerial functions in keeping with their abilities and giftings, to
assist in assessing congregational needs and determining ways to meet
those needs, to assist in visitation of members, persons in the
community and in the hospital, to assist in keeping in touch with the
total church membership and keeping it current, to give guidance in
matters relating to church discipline, to stay alert to the needs of
the pastor and his family, to coordinate the ministerial functions in
event of the absence of the pastor, to actively welcome visitors and
newcomers, and to assist in approving persons applying for church
membership in an attitude of prayer and
humility.
The writer of Hebrews tells us to "remember
those who rule over (teach) over you, who have spoken the word of God
to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their
conduct." Hebrews 13:7 (NKJ) Let us hold up these men of faith in
our midst, with prayer and encouraging words that they will not grow
weary or stumble.
