God Is A Good God

God is a good God, yes He is! Woo-hoo!

God is a good God, yes He is! Woo-hoo!

(Carmen (on left) with some her campers)

The chorus of this much loved Highland song rings in my mind as I reflect upon this past summer. During the months of late June, July, and early August, I had the incredible privilege of working as a youth camp counselor at Highland Retreat Center, located right in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For those of you who have attended this place as campers, memories for you might include catching crayfish in the stream, sleeping under the stars and in cabins, cooking pancakes over an open fire, and hiking to lofty destinations. For your counselors, memories might differ slightly to include blow-drying the wet sneakers of kids who had forgotten to wear their “creek shoes” into the stream, sleepless nights due to homesick campers, kindling that  refused to ignite, and big, green packs full of food and water to be carried to those high and lofty destinations.

So, why did I call this job an “incredible privilege”? Because I remember so many times when God would use these “difficulties” and others like them as ways for us to show His love and character to our campers and to teach us counselors to depend upon Him as well. I remember the amazement from campers that someone would love them enough to be willing to dry out their shoes during their break, the girls who fell asleep after being reminded that God was watching over them and didn’t want them to worry, and the impossible breakfast and dinner fires that started after we prayed for them. Most of all, I remember the campers who came wanting someone to pray with them to ask Jesus to become their Savior. What more of a privilege could you ask for than that?!

So, if you happened to ask me, “Is God a good God?” I’d have to respond, “Yes He is!” God IS a good God, yes He is! Woo-hoo!
