Update
on the Shultz Family
Excerpt of letter from Ron:
“It is hard to believe
that we have completed the first half of the trimester already.
The lists of vocabulary keep multiplying and the grammar rules are
getting increasingly complicated, but it is very helpful to be learning
more and more of what we need to communicate in this wonderful language.
We will soon be moving on to past-tense verbs which will be very
helpful. We are all making
progress in our learning ‘poco a poco’ (little by little).
Hannah and Jeremiah got their first report cards today, and they
are both doing very well. Hannah
loves learning Spanish and she works hard at her homework each evening.
Jeremiah is reading more and more, and he has a good time playing
soccer with his classmates two days a week after school.
Bethany is picking up many words and phrases from her Costa Rican
preschool teachers, Miss Gloria and Miss Monica.”

During
a work weekend with a group of 19 others from the language school,
Ron and the family helped put the final touches on a new church in
Talamanca for the indigenous Bribri people.
Ron writes, “We worked hard from 6 AM until dark on
Saturday. |
Email from Regina December 2, 2003
“About Hannah . . She
has a thyroglossal duct cyst that got infected for the 4th time in her
life here in Costa Rica. Each time the Drs. have mentioned the possibility
of surgery but for one reason or another have decided to wait. The surgeon
here recommends going ahead and correcting the problem so that it doesn't
keep happening. They want the infection to be cleared up and then to do
surgery after that. The surgery will involve removing the cyst, the duct
that runs between the thyroid and the tongue and a small piece of the
tongue bone. It is a 1-2 hour operation with an overnight stay. We will
probably set the surgery date yet this week. Possibility the week of the
15th. We are done with classes the 12th.
We are at peace with this decision but would covet everyone's
prayers”.
