Frank and Debbie’s Call to Prison Ministry

When God gets a hold of a life, exciting things happen, and Frank and Debbie are living testimony to it.  Their passion for prison ministry and CMA (Christian Motorcyclists Association) developed over time with several factors contributing.  For the Vaughns prison ministry and CMA are uniquely intertwined.  In 2005, Frank participated in a Bill Glass seminar at the Powhatan Correctional Center.  The rumbling roar of cycles captivates the attention of the men, which in turn opens a unique door to conversation and ministry.  In 2006, Frank and Debbie went with the CMA group into Elk Hill, a home for troubled boys, for a day of games and a cookout with the boys.  Debbie  realized she was drawn to that facility and it was a place she would like to get involved in.  As she shared with Frank, they realized he too was feeling the nudging.

Fellow CMA cyclists, George and Dale Mitchell from Goochland, became friends with the Vaughns and together they started going to Elk Hill for regular Tuesday evening Bible study.  They begin the evening  with snacks and conversation before having a Bible study and prayer time with the boys.

No longer are these “troubled” boys at Elk Hill.  These are “their” boys at Elk Hill and “our” boys.  Quite often on Sunday mornings a van load shows up here at church for Sunday School or special programs.  The Vaughns are allowed to take the boys on an individual basis out to eat or to their farm, allowing the youth to be a part of their lives for the day.

Frank also goes to the Medical Unit at Deep Meadow on Saturday mornings and Powhatan Correctional once a month.  He is serving as chaplain of the Richmond chapter of CMA and is starting a local chapter in Powhatan.  Any cyclist who is interested is invited to join.  Jim Benson has joined the local team.
