In the Presence of My Enemies by Garcia BurnhamKidnapped. Held hostage by radical Muslims seeking a ransom for their return and deprived of beds, hot water, electricity, their Bibles, adequate food and life’s basic needs. They slept chained to trees under the watchful eyes of guards. Their captors were constantly on the move to avoid detection by the Philippino army seeking to destroy this rebel band who tried to overthrow the government. What a challenge to read of the faith of Gracia and Martin Burnham, a busy missionary pilot and his wife, who were thrust for over a year into a world where they made no decisions on their own, had no responsibilities, and were separated from their young children and missionary associates. How that faith sustained them and how they lived and ministered "In the Presence of Their Enemies" was a challenge to me. This book reminded me that walking the Christian walk may take me into places where my dependency on God be tested way beyond what I can humanly handle. By Ed Ranck |
