   Caught or Taught

By Lorrie Schaefer

There is a profound saying: Most of what we teach to our children is "caught rather than taught." This certainly has been true in our family in lots of ways. One of the positive areas Gene and I have influenced our children is in the area of reading. Reading has always been a favorite pastime of mine. I knew it was something I wanted to pass on to my children. When our children were babies, we would look at picture books together. During their toddler years we would spend time reading to them. And when the time came for each of them to learn to read, I had the privilege of being there to watch their faces light up when for the first time they could read for themselves the words on the page. Some in our family read volumes; others enjoy short stories and magazines; there are even a couple who will pick up encyclopedias. But no matter what their style of reading, daily I can look at my children and know that they all have "caught" my love for a good book. Reading can be fun and adventuresome. Where else could you visit lots of different places and meet new and interesting people while staying right in your own home? In a book!

In The Halliway Boys on Crusade Island, Don, Bill and Rusty win a boat called the "Janice Kay." Their job is to take passengers back and forth from the Westwood River to Oak Island. On one of their trips, two mysterious women come on board. These women force the boys to take them to a different island, called Crusade Island. The boys have no clue that these women are doing something illegal. Dan, Bill and Rusty have to trust that God will see them through this bad situation. If you like action and adventure, read this book.

In Not Regina by Christmas Carol Kauffman, everyone is surprised when Regina, a good Catholic girl becomes an Anabaptist when she sees Felix Manz being drowned for his faith. Though she now has peace in her heart, Regina is questioned, tortured, and put into prison. What do you think will happen to Regina? You can find out by reading this book in the church library. I liked the book because Regina doesn't give up even when it is difficult.
