Keeping In Touch...

Glen and Ethel Sell

July 10, 2002

On June 10 ,2002, Glen Sell suffered a heart attack at the Toronto Airport as he was returning home from meetings at the Hunta Mennonite Church. He wrote:

It is true that I experienced a cardiac arrest while going through customs at the Toronto Airport. At the moment I went down, a lady doctor from Chicago was passing through the terminal. She called for help and immediately began applying CPR. When the paramedics arrived, they had to shock me three times before my heart started beating. I was out of it for several days. I have no memory of our son’s flying in from California. He remained with Ethel three days. When reality began returning, the doctor said to me twice, "You were dead." If I was dead, then for whatever reason, God has granted me a bit more time. The doctor also said only three out of one hundred survive this kind of attack outside a medical facility.

While I was in the hospital, I had quadruple bypass surgery. Then, because of internal bleeding, a second operation was needed. The first number of days after returning home June 25 were quite scary. I couldn't read, write, spell, add, etc. One of the concerns at the hospital was the possibility of brain damage. That is now history. Everything is functioning well. My greatest need at the moment is renewal of strength. I walk every day, but it is tiring.

Today (July 10) I will be seeing a heart doctor for the first time since returning from Toronto. I did see the family doctor after returning to see how I stood the trip home. He said I did well. Ethel wasn't with me for the meetings at Hunta. You can imagine how she felt getting a call from the airlines telling her I was in the hospital. It's exciting and emotional to see the way family and friends immediately surrounded her with encouragement and help. PTL, we are celebrating our 1st month anniversary today. The doctor has said it will be 4 - 6 months before I feel normal (whatever that means).

God is good. Your continuing prayers will be appreciated.

Love to you all, Glen

Greg and Ann Glacken

July 15, 2002

Greg is still working for the same company, although it has been bought several times since we left Powhatan. It is currently owned by Georgia Pacific.
I continue to homeschool Justin. We will be beginning grade four this year and will be co-oping with two other families. Justin is a very good student. He is in the local 4-H group, participates in homeschool events and YMCA sports and is a member of our church's youth Bible Club.
Greg and I are very active in our church, Concord ARP. Greg teaches Sunday School for Justin's age group. I have taken the position of Director of Children's Ministries, which means I organize and oversee any programs having to do with the children. Occasionally I speak at the Women of the Church meetings.
Carrie married John Howland almost two years ago, September 16, 2000. They live in uptown Charlotte and are currently having a home built about twenty minutes closer to us. It should be completed in about one month. John is a pharmaceutical salesman. Carrie is currently working for Deloitte and Touche accounting firm in Charlotte. They both travel quite a bit with their jobs.
Tim continues to work for Corley Electrical Controls. He does heating and cooling and electrical wiring. He has been on his own for about a year now.
Erin married John Pepper almost a year and a half ago, March 24, 2001. (Can you believe both girls married Johns? We call Carrie's Johnny and Erin's John.) They have been blessed with a beautiful baby boy, Gavin Tyler, who was born this April 8th. Grandma was blessed to be able to witness her first grandchild coming into the world. Greg and I are so excited about being grandparents--it is so much fun. They live about a half hour from us. Erin is a hair stylist and work part time. Both grandmothers share baby-sitting responsibilities. John
works for his family's business, Airline Maintenance Training.
We still have sheep, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats on our three acres. I spin, weave, and knit with the wool from our sheep when time allows. The garden has not done well as we are in our fourth year of drought and I'm afraid to run the well too much.
Well, that is about all. We do hope everyone is doing well at Powhatan Mennonite. We still have a very special place for you all in our hearts.

Give our love to everyone. Ann
