On Saturday, June 23, 2001, the Jr. Youth group participated
in the Low Ropes course at the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center. The ropes
course leader from WCRC, Bob Briscoe, presented a fun and challenging group of
activities throughout the three- and one-half-hour course. He followed up each
challenge with a devotional time highlighting a Biblical principle.
The "Blind Trust Walk" and the "Mine Field" helped to
demonstrate that trust is foundational to all relationships and our relationship
with God. The next activity, "Trolleys," focused on the role of
leadership, and we were reminded that Jesus taught servant leadership. The
"Telephone Pole Shuffle" activity and devotional showed us that we
have different gifts, but we are one body. "Nitro Crossing"
highlighted the importance of getting God's word into our lives. We were
encouraged to read, memorize, study, hear, and meditate. The final activity,
"Mt. Tops," was especially challenging mentally, but the group figured
it out and accomplished its goal. The lesson from Mt. Tops is that there is a
time to be serious and a time to play. We also learned that a task that seems
impossible may not be impossible after all. The course is an excellent tool for
developing group unity. .
After completing the course, we got a peek preview of the high ropes course. The
activities in that course were really high up! (The low ropes course must be
completed before a group can participate in the high ropes course.) Our day
ended with a picnic lunch on the grounds at WCRC before we headed home. .
