Isabel’s Fury

-Our Stories-

Quarterfield Stables (pictured at left) at Gene and Pat Hertzlers’ lost a third of the roof during the storm. The nativity star also blew off the roof but amazingly landed in one piece, unharmed.

Janet Habel was no so lucky. She went outside during the storm to start the generator. While she and Joshua tried to secure a tarp protecting the generator she slipped, twisting and breaking her ankle. Janet has to be in a wheelchair for six weeks following surgery to put a plate and pin in her ankle.

Levitt Bell, neighbor of the Kennells and Moyers, was seriously injured when a tree fell on his tractor trailer as he was trying to get home before the storm. Four days later the Bell’s home was totally destroyed in a fire. The Menno Notes addition on the church web page contains a link to the full story in the Powhatan Today newspaper. Levitt is recovering and doing well.

More of Levitt's story (Bell Family Put to Test) can be read from an article taken from the Powhatan Today newspaper October 1, 2003.

The tornado that roared like a freight train through Amelia at 5:30 a.m. four days after the storm awakened Dale and Martha Bowles, causing them to seek shelter in the hallway of their home. They were grateful for God’s protection and suffered no damage.

Church services at PMC on Sunday morning following the storm were held outside even though the electricity came on during the early morning hours.

The youth group cleaned up branches and removed several trees that had fallen in Auldine McKinney’s yard.

Bill Schaefer lost some very large, old trees in his subdivision. He counted the rings from two of the largest trees that fell and they had 90+ rings each. There was also a huge oak knocked down in the woods next to where they are building a pond. It was so large that it would take three adults, arms extended, holding hands to get all the way around the circumference.
