From the Pastor’s Heart….

A Little Bit of Sarah Kalichman

If you haven’t noticed a new college girl roaming the halls at church lately, I’d like to take a moment and tell you a little about who she is and why she is here.

Sarah Kalichman is a rising senior at Eastern Mennonite University and is taking part in their Ministry Inquiry Program.  A goal of this program is for the student to get involved in the ministries of a local church under the direction of the pastor.  This is to provide opportunities for a person to see where he or she may have interest in ministry within the local church.

Sarah has done secretarial work and has been helping with other things, as well. I have asked her to read a couple books (Rethinking The Church and Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire), and we have begun to review them.  This program is not only about Sarah discerning where the Lord might be calling her to minister in the church, but it is also a chance for us to get some insights from someone from the “outside” and for her to make some evaluations of us.  I look forward to dialoguing about this further with Sarah.

In the meantime, here is a little bit about who Sarah is.  Sarah was born in Richmond but spent most of her growing up years in Chesapeake.  Her family later moved to Richmond in 2000, and she attended Godwin High School.  After graduation, she went to Bridgewater College and J. S. Reynolds, each for one semester.  Then, she transferred to Eastern Mennonite University as a sophomore and is majoring in Liberal Arts with minors in math, environmental science, and Bible.

Sarah grew up in the United Methodist Church until high school when her family then began attending Grove Avenue Baptist Church.  It was there that she was baptized as a freshman in high school.  At Grove Avenue, Sarah was encouraged to grow and mature.  She was involved with the youth group, attending midweek activities and other youth events.

Sarah has one older brother who lives in Ohio and works as a church music director.  Her father works for Dominion Resources (VA Power), and her mother does nurse consulting from home for Health Screen Disease Management.   Sarah enjoys reading, playing the flute, and working with children.

Sarah chose to do the Ministry Inquiry Program here at PMC because she wanted to gain a perspective of how ministries are done in a small, Mennonite church in a more rural setting.  She is excited about the local church and is looking forward to seeing where God may lead her in different areas of ministry.

Welcome Sarah!  We are glad to have you among us.

Why can’t we do this with our own youth, too?

    Welcome Sarah!

 Hello everyone!

I am very excited to have the opportunity to participate in an internship at Powhatan Mennonite Church this summer.  When I visited this past winter, I knew that God was calling me to explore ministry in this setting.  Although I am not sure of the direction, I am confident that God will teach me what He would have me learn through this experience.  I feel extremely blessed to be welcomed into this church community.  Everyone has been so kind, gracious, encouraging, and hospitable, for which I am grateful as I become acquainted with each of you.  I am looking forward to journeying with you this summer.  May God richly bless you this day!

In Christ’s love,

  Sarah Kalichman
