The True Tale of Four Red Hens

Once upon a time there was a very pleasant lady who lived down on a long lane in the country.  The lady loved flowers, watching her songbirds and caring for her small flock of four red hens whom she named Auldine, Martha, Lillian and Alice.  The hens gave the lady much pleasure as she watched them clucking around the yard grubbing for bugs and worms.  Auldine, Lillian and Alice were very industrious and regularly laid a golden brown egg for the pleasant lady’s breakfast.   But Martha refused to lay any eggs despite repeated stern warnings. One bright sunny day the pleasant lady decided that Martha had been stubborn long enough and that evening a fat hen was eaten for supper.

Moral of the story:  Hens who don’t lay eggs will be eaten for supper!
