Congregational Life

Did You Know......

  • John-Paul Iazzi is taking flying lessons at Chesterfield Airport. He wants to be a commercial airline pilot and is on his way to fulfilling that dream.
  • Derek Gonzelez attended mini-camp at Williamsburg Retreat Center July 6-8. A highlight was winning 1st place in a boat race. The campers made their own boats and they blew on them to make them go.
  • Bob and Marie Hertzler are spending the month of August biking in Newfoundland.
  • The "Beach Bums," a group of ladies from our fellowship and some friends and family from elsewhere, will be headed for Nags Head on their annual safari for beaching, bathing, reading, lazing, eating, and shopping. Among those going are Doris Ranck, Cindy Greene, Carolyn Nowlin, Dale and Martha Bowles and assorted other friends and sisters. They will be leaving Sunday morning, August 17 and will spend the week at the beach. Though reports from past years are sketchy, the amount of laughter and talk issuing from their cottage may make the neighbors think of calling the sheriff or closing their doors and turning up the air conditioning.

Congregational Care Groups

Our congregation is divided into seven care groups that meet twice monthly. The spiritual leadership team believes care groups are an important part of the congregation and meet needs in a way that the Wednesday evening services were not doing. Tim Kennell and Ed and Doris Ranck are providing leadership for the care group teams. Once a month they meet with the leaders and talk about the praises, challenges and difficulties the groups are facing. Tim says he reminds the leaders of the mission statement and briefly speaks about one subject. This past year the groups have been studying the book of Hebrews.

Mission Statement

To encounter Christ’s presence, power and purpose in our lives.

We desire to make daily sanctification, mutual care, fellowship and ministry of the Holy Spirit a reality in our lives.

As we experience that reality in our lives, we will share our faith with others.

The Groups: (Leaders and their wives are in bold print)

Louie/Helen Burkholder: Marie Hardy, Bob/Marie Hertzler, Lillian Hertzler, Peggy Leeth, Connie/Wayne Lancaster, Wally/Dorcas Schaefer, Vernon/Francis Weaver, and Alice White. This group calls themselves "Over the Hill Group!" They enjoy sharing about their trips, and as a group, traveled to Newport News to see a play at the Yoder Barn. The group is full of humor, and laughter is their trademark! They enjoyed meeting at Bob and Marie’s cabin on the river twice. For a service project they gave a blanket and sang for a community man who had a house fire. This group has been together for two years.

Pres/Carolyn Nowlin: Dave/Linda Benson, Gene/Pat Hertzler, Steve/Megan Meadows, Auldine McKinney, Sam/Poe Powell, Bill/Bertha Schaefer, and Ron/Regina Shultz. This group loves to eat and looks for every opportunity to have a meal together. Good-natured ribbing and laughter fill their meetings. They enjoy singing, and sharing/prayer time is a big part of their meetings. One evening they showed up at the Bensons and helped them move into their new home. They have enjoyed the privilege of praying and supporting the Shultzs through their process of going into missions. To help show their support, they gave money for the purchase of a digital camera.

Ron/Rosalie Moyer: Jerry/Patty Critcher, Tommy/Susie Gonzalez, Ray/Betty Hertzler, Vernon/Christina Moyer, Sam/Dorothy Powell, Iris Sassine, and Donna Wyatt. This group says they found Hebrews a hard book, but they have loved to study it as Ron has made it so very interesting. They feel they have gleaned so many little nuggets of truth. They have made a special effort to care for persons outside their group with prayer and cards with words of encouragement. In August they enjoyed a cruise to Tangier Island.

Tim/Bev Kennell: Beth/Curtis Brenneman, Josh Habel, Nathan Landis, Sidney Moyer, Ben Powell, Andy Vaughn, Misty Yoder, and Rusty Yoder. Known as the Young Adults Groups, this group has been together for two years. Not only do they meet on the regular dates but on the fifth Wednesday evenings as well. This year they have been studying the Book of Romans and talk a lot about issues and how they apply to scripture. They also enjoy social times together with card games, a wiener roast, etc.

Miles/Sharon Pruett: Steve/Anita Graber, Keith/Viv Hertzler, Bill/Karen Iazzi, and Gene/Lorrie Schaefer. This group is very relaxed and comfortable with each other and has enjoyed fellowship through several picnics. They enjoy music and singing together, using numerous instruments. They have quite a few children, and several of the older girls care for the younger children during their Bible study time.

Ed/Doris Ranck: Dale/Martha Bowles, Helen/Paul Brenneman and Glen/Carol Landis. This group has enjoyed their Bible study times together. They also had a work day at Martha Bowles’, helping around the house and yard.

Frank/Debbie Vaughn: Joe/Davina Lancaster, Ivan/Joyce/Carmen Lehman, Dave/Nancy Moyer, Sheila Schaefer, and Dickie/Brenda Walton. This group is diligent in their Bible studies. They also enjoyed a work day at Peggy Leeth’s house and fellowship at two picnics.

What are the plans for this next year?

The groups will be staying together as they are structured for this upcoming year, however a few will have new leaders. A book study is in the plan, but the title is yet to be announced. If you are not currently a part of a group and would like to participate, please contact Tim, Ed or Doris.
