Carolyn Nowlin To Serve as New Church Secretary

As we say goodbye to Sheila Schaefer and express gratitude for the great work she has done,  we welcome Carolyn Nowlin as the new church secretary. Carolyn’s experiences as a high school English teacher and former pastor’s wife give her a broad range of valuable experience.

Since retiring in 2002, Carolyn has been working with the mentor program for new teachers in Cumberland County.  Tutoring students at Precious Blessing Academy has also kept her in the school setting.

Pres and Carolyn co-teach the youth Sunday School class and serve on the Shultzes' missionary support team. As missions and service coordinator for PMC, Carolyn stays connected to the wider work of the church.

The Nowlins have three children and seven grandchildren.

The church office hours will continue to be Thursday and Friday mornings,  8:00 AM to 12 noon.  Announcements for the bulletin are due by noon on Thursdays.

Where, oh where have the Menno Notes gone?

In July, Kayley Kennell took  her Menno Notes along to Rosedale Chorale camp in Ohio.  It was supposed to travel west with the Kennell family, but did not survive the shaving cream fight!

In July, Gene and Pat Hertzler took their Menno Notes along to Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.

Lonely—Who Me?

Does your life feel like it is upside down and downside up?

Yes, you.  Yes, me.  An empty nest, widowhood, moving to a new location, divorce, going away to college, rejection, singleness, sacrifice, obedience—sometimes even marriage--are some of the loneliness-inducing scenarios that Elisabeth Elliot addresses in her small book The Path of Loneliness: It may seem a wilderness, but it can lead you to God.   Loneliness, by Elliot’s definition is a universal condition, but how we live it varies dramatically, even among Christians.

Those who have been influenced by Elliot’s other works will not be surprised that this book is challenging and inspiring.  Because the author has walked faithfully with God through much suffering (and all suffering involves loneliness to some degree), she is able to write with authority about the often disabling pain.  Her prescription for trans-forming even the most devastating losses has the power to change our lives.   As the author reveals about one of her own seasons of loneliness, “The emphasis now is not on loss, privation, or a price to be paid.  I see it as an act of intelligent worship, and as a gift God has given me to give back to Him in order that He may make something of it” (p. 99).

Whether we’re walking through a dark valley ourselves, or we love someone who is and want to know God’s way of living such times, this book will prove encouraging.
