Where, oh where have the Menno
Notes gone?
Lonely—Who
Me?
Yes,
you. Yes, me.
An empty nest, widowhood, moving to a new location, divorce, going away
to college, rejection, singleness, sacrifice, obedience—sometimes even
marriage--are some of the loneliness-inducing scenarios that Elisabeth Elliot
addresses in her small book The Path of Loneliness: It may seem a wilderness, but it
can lead you to God.
Loneliness, by Elliot’s definition is a universal condition, but how we
live it varies dramatically, even among Christians. Those
who have been influenced by Elliot’s other works will not be surprised that
this book is challenging and inspiring. Because
the author has walked faithfully with God through much suffering (and all
suffering involves loneliness to some degree), she is able to write with
authority about the often disabling pain. Her
prescription for trans-forming even the most devastating losses has the power to
change our lives. As the
author reveals about one of her own seasons of loneliness, “The emphasis now
is not on loss, privation, or a price to be paid.
I see it as an act of intelligent worship, and as a gift God has given me
to give back to Him in order that He may make something of it” (p.
99). Whether
we’re walking through a dark valley ourselves, or we love someone who is and
want to know God’s way of living such times, this book will prove encouraging. Come and join
us… …. in the women’s study using The Path of Loneliness. Please contact Pat Hertzler (598-4021) who will coordinate
the Tuesday evening meetings or Debbie Vaughn (598-1834) who will be
coordinating the Wednesday morning.
The cost of the book is $11.00 |
