Powhatan Mennonite Church was organized in 1963 by a group of dairy farmers who had moved from the Newport News, VA. area. We met in our homes for a short time and then used a small cinderblock house. The first stage of our permanent building was dedicated in 1965. This provided six classrooms and an assembly room. When a growing attendance demanded an expansion, the present building was completed in 1983.

Who Are We?

Our Mission Statement

God has called us in Jesus Christ;

To a life of holiness and worship in which we express our love for Him,

And to a life of nurture, equipping us to reach out, as the Holy Spirit leads, in evangelistic, spiritual, and social ministries.

To God alone be the glory!

Spiritual Ministries

The basic purpose of our educational/spiritual ministry is to provide knowledge of God through His Word, as provided in the Bible. Without this knowledge, we could not truly worship God. Sunday School classes are provided for all age groups from nursery through adult classes.

  • Powhatan Mennonite Youth and Junior Youth Fellowships - To provide the youth of the congregation with an opportunity to develop Christian character. Membership in the Youth includes all high school youth who have reached the age of 14 and Jr. youth  members are ages 12-13.

  • Girls' & Boys'  Club- To assist in the Christian growth of our girls and boys, ages 8 through 12.

  • Annual Vacation Bible School - To aid children in their spiritual growth.

    • Upcoming date:  June 23-27, 2008

  • Church Library - To provide constructive literature for life enrichment resources for study of the Bible

  • Prayer Chain - Organized for the purpose of interceding with God for the needs of  the congregation and others.

  • Women’s Outreach- To encourage women in their unique mission and service giftings in the life of the local church, the community, and links to the broader, church-wide women’s outreach ministries. The women meet the second Tuesday of each month during the day to quilt and  make items for the annual Virginia Relief Sale,  which benefits Mennonite Central Committee (MCC);  the women also respond to needs in the church and community. There  also are  times of Bible study and fellowship luncheons.

  • Men's Prayer and Bible Study - Meet each Saturday morning at 7 a.m. at the church for fellowship, Bible study and prayer.

Evangelistic Ministries

"Across the street and around the world"

  • Prison Ministries - Hebrews 13:3 encourages us to bring the Word of God to the men, women and young people incarcerated in prison.  Even though the open door has closed for this opportunity at the local prisons,  persons are involved in prison fellowship, grading Bible Studies courses and as other opportunities arise through "We Care" prison crusade, Angel Tree, Ride for the Son, Elk Hill Boys Camp, etc.
  •    Live Nativity Drama depicting  the birth of Jesus by the youth for a witness to the community
  • Christmas Caroling

  • Missionaries From Our Fellowship

  1. Ron, Regina, Hannah, Jeremiah & Bethany Shultz -Peru

  2. Ed and Doris Ranck-We Care Prison Ministry, Atmore, Alabama

  3. Sheila Schaefer-Faith Family Ministries, Blue Ridge, GA

  4. Donna Wyatt-We Care Prison Ministry (Assistant Chaplin for Tutwiler Prison at Montgomery, AL)

  • Examples of organizations supported financially and participated in as volunteers:

  1. Mennonite Board of Missions

  2.   Virginia Board of Missions

  3. Mennonite Disaster Service is a channel through which various constituencies of the Anabaptist church can respond to those affected by disasters in North America. While our main focus is on clean up, repair and rebuilding homes, this activity becomes a means of touching lives and helping people regain faith and wholeness.

  4. Powhatan Coalition of Churches

Who are we and what do we believe ...

Powhatan Mennonite Church is a member of the Mennonite Church USA and Virginia Conference of the Mennonite Church.

The Powhatan congregation believes that its purpose is to worship God and expand His Kingdom in the local community and the world..

Mennonites hold many basic doctrines in common with other Christian groups. In relation to the theological issues of the Reformation times, they emphasize the following:

  • The Bible as the authoritative Word of God and the New Testament as the pattern of life for the community of believers.

  • The sinfulness of man and the necessity of regeneration through accepting Jesus as Savior and Lord.

  • The church, the visible body of Christ, practicing believer’s baptism and regarding the elements of the Lord’s Supper as memorial symbols.

  • The life of active peacemaking rather than participation in warfare.

  • The separation of church and state.

  • The life of simplicity and separation from worldly extravagancies.

  • The believing community, a refuge of love and mutual aid.

  • The daily walk of obedient discipleship, under the leading of the Holy Spirit
